I recently bought an air purifier for my house, because my gf and I have 3 cats. In researching air purifiers, I discovered many of them are total crap, and it takes far too much looking into airflow rates and replacement filter costs to pick a truly good air purifier. I did, and it's already paid for itself.
I won't bore you with all of the particulars of air purifiers, but needless to say, there are many particulars. I ended up buying the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from Sears.
My gf often leaves for a few days at a time to take care of her elderly mom, who lives about 80 miles away. She left last Friday and returned today, about an hour ago. Since she wasn't home, I spent a good portion of my weekend partaking in activities which are legal in Colorado while binge watching Arrow, Star Trek DS9, and Food Network.
I kept on top of the house cleaning, but I was still a little surprised, in a good way, to receive the following message upon my gf's return home:
It's so clean and fresh in here. How nice to come home to!
I never even took the purifier off its lowest fan speed (with the ionizer turned on).
If that's not a ringing endorsement for the Kenmore 83396 Large Room HEPA Filter Air Purifier, I don't know what is.

Soon every State will pass the law, it's inevitable. Do you have to clean the machine out? Thinking about getting a smaller version of this since you say it's quiet.

It's not the legal pot that I loved so much (even though it was really nice to just walk into a store and not feel sketch at all getting it) it was the people there. It is a night and day difference between the average fake socal assholes and the incredibly friendly people in Denver.

It does require cleaning but not a ton. Once a month or so, the carbon pre-filter needs to be vacuumed, and any dust that's built up inside should be wiped out. The main HEPA filter is supposed to last 6-12 months, basically replace it once it turns dark grayish.
There are other brands and types out there. What I learned is that anything where it claims to be an easy handy dandy just rinse the filter out type deal, isn't going to filter the air as well as something with a real HEPA filter. But the purifier companies make all these fakemeout "HEPA-type" and "HEPA grade" nonsense that isn't really HEPA.
So, get one with a real HEPA filter, and understand that at some point down the road you'll have to buy replacement filters.

Okay, buying replacement filters aren't much of an issue, were you looking at any other brands? How big is the room or area you use it in? Not for nothing but I've never had an issue with a Kenmore appliance in my life, even growing up we had Kenmore ACs and Blenders that didn't skip a beat in a decade.

Keeping my answer simple, because I tried explaining the few features and it got all long, the Kenmore "medium" one should probably be pretty decent. It has like 85% of the capacity of the big one, and it's $149. To do better than that with a "real" purifier like a Winix, Coway, Fellowes is all gonna be more. Of those, the Fellowes have the cheapest replacement filters. The rest, including the Kenmore, all have about the same filter costs. Over time that's where your real cost is if you figure the purifier lasts several years.
